Darlington Raceway To Feature Interactive Display At 2013 NASCAR Preview

Darlington Raceway will once again be part of the 2013 NASCAR Preview on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Now in its second year, the Preview is a popular destination for race fans wanting to visit displays featuring their favorite NASCAR tracks, drivers and sponsors. Thousands of fans visited Darlington Raceway’s display booth last year.

“We’re excited to be returning to the NASCAR Preview at the Charlotte Convention Center on Feb. 9 and spend time with our race fans,” track President Chris Browning said. “This event is always a great way to engage with fans who love the track Too Tough To Tame or for fans who may be interested in attending a Darlington race for the first time.”

The track will feature a fun and interactive display for its fans this year, which will include a prize wheel, free giveaways and a television displaying last season’s exciting Bojangles’ Southern 500, won by Jimmie Johnson, which gave owner Rick Hendrick his 200th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory.

A special appearance will also be made by current Miss South Carolina and Miss America first runner-up Ali Rogers, who will be on hand from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to sign autographs and participate in photo opportunities.

Rogers recently competed in the Miss America competition last weekend, finishing first runner-up to the winner Miss New York Mallory Hagan. Rogers is a native of Laurens, S.C.

Fans can register to win a pair of tickets for the Bojangles’ Southern 500 as well as purchase tickets, camping or hospitality for the track’s annual Sprint Cup Series weekend on May 10-11, 2013, when they are there.

“This is an exciting time for our fans,” Browning said. “With the introduction of the new Gen-6 race car, a new defending champion and some great drama that unfolded at the end of the 2012 season, 2013 is shaping up to be a very exciting season and the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington will be no different in May.”

Robert Garland, Darlington’s Director of Emergency Services, was honored as the recipient of NASCAR’s Track Services Innovation Award, which was announced on Monday in Charlotte, N.C. Garland received the award for his creative management of the track’s SAFER barrier inventory.

“I was totally surprised with this award,” Garland said. “We are always looking at ways to improve the way we do things at Darlington to be more efficient and timely with our response when something occurs on a race weekend. I am humbled that NASCAR recognized those efficiencies by selecting me as their innovation award winner.”

Garland has been in charge of the fire and emergency response teams over the past three years overseeing all fire and EMS efforts at the track Too Tough To Tame. He was in charge of the track’s wrecker response services prior to his appointment as director of emergency services. He has been a member of the City of Darlington Fire Department for 32 years serving as captain for 24 years and as assistant chief since 2008.

“This is such a tremendous honor for Robert,” track President Chris Browning said. “He is very deserving of this award. His innovative efforts have been utilized and implemented throughout the sport and to see NASCAR recognize that says a lot for what Robert does for racing and Darlington Raceway specifically.”

Darlington Raceway’s Director of Security Mike Richardson was honored with the top track security award last year.

With two staff members earning awards in back-to-back years from NASCAR, Darlington Raceway continues to be recognized as a leader in the industry for emergency services and security for its Sprint Cup Series race weekend each May.

The awards are a testament to the time and effort the staff at Darlington put into making sure fans, drivers and other visitors to the track are provided a safe environment to see the greatest racing in the country every year.

Extreme Sports Legend Travis Pastrana To Race At Darlington Raceway

TravisPastranaTravis Pastrana, the extreme sports legend and X Games superstar, will return to Darlington Raceway in 2013, running the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the track Too Tough To Tame for the second consecutive year.

Pastrana announced today his intent to run the full 33-race 2013 Nationwide Series schedule for legendary owner Jack Roush, which will include the Nationwide Series 200 event at Darlington on Friday, May 10.

Pastrana made a handful of starts in the Nationwide Series in 2012, which included a 17th-place finish at Darlington last May. He qualified 25th for the race, but earned his first Darlington stripe when he hit the wall during his qualifying lap, which relegated him to start at the rear of the field.

“It was very, very difficult. We got our stripe during qualifying. I was pretty nervous coming into the race. I think the guys knew I was nervous. They made me real tight all night which was okay because we stayed out of trouble, that was kind of the goal, let’s keep me from the wall,” Pastrana said after the race.

The 11-time X Games champion will drive the No. 60 Ford Mustang at Darlington, in what he considers one of the toughest tracks to race in NASCAR.

Following his Friday morning practice session at Darlington last season, Pastrana told the media, “It was the most scared I’ve been in a vehicle, in anything with a roll cage for sure.”
